Senior Software Engineer

Senior Software Engineer

This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer.

This is a full-time position open to candidates in Canada.

Compensation: $98,000 - $147,000

About the role

We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer to join our engineering team. You'll work across our stack to build and maintain the tools independent publishers rely on every day. Our environment spans multiple languages and frameworks, so we need someone who's comfortable moving between them and picking up new ones as needed.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and ship features across the full stack, from database to UI
• Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code
• Collaborate with product, design and other engineers to scope and deliver work
• Debug and resolve issues across our systems
• Drive technical decisions and help shape our architecture
• Work directly with the CTO on technical strategy
• Scale and unify our systems and infrastructure to scale to hundreds of independent publishers
• Review code and mentor other engineers on the team

What we're looking for

• 5+ years of professional full stack software engineering experience
• Expertise in TypeScript, one or more frontend frameworks, and at least one other language
• Solid understanding of HTML and CSS
• Experience with relational databases and API design
• Ability and willingness to learn new languages and frameworks as needed: our environment includes Python, PHP, Ruby, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
• Understanding of application security best practices (secure coding, CSP, authentication/authorization, common vulnerabilities like XSS, XSRF, and SQL injection)
• Strong communication skills and comfort working in a remote, distributed team
• Confidence in writing unit and integration tests
• A track record of shipping and owning production systems
• Ability to own the full development lifecycle of a work product, whether that’s a prototype (that may not have a design or be fully scoped) or a full production feature
• Comfortable using AI coding tools responsibly: able to leverage them for productivity while still understanding, reviewing, and taking ownership of the code you ship

Nice to have

• Experience in publishing, media, or subscription/membership platforms
• Experience with Python, PHP, or Ruby specifically
• DevOps experience with Heroku, Google Cloud, AWS, or Cloudflare

• Are energized by growth. Creating new products and processes is your thing. Being part of a big, ambitious vision excites you. You're not afraid of change. You love taking chances and being accountable to goals.
• Are always seeking ways to do things more efficiently. Indiegraf is scaling a network of independent news outlets that can succeed in markets where traditional news models fail because they are more efficient. Our team is obsessed with replicability, scalability and cost efficiency.
• Value a healthy work culture. We are a mission-driven, female-led company shaking up legacy news media dynamics. We work hard and unplug most weekends and during vacations. You want to contribute to a great culture that makes our team love Mondays. We are collaborative, and strive to win together as a team.

About Indiegraf

Indiegraf is a mission-driven technology company built by and for independent local media leaders. We serve large and small digital media, newspapers, radio stations and public media across the Americas, in both English and Spanish, with a special focus on underserved communities. We are a privately-held company, incorporated in Canada and the U.S., majority-owned by employees and impact investors who believe the future of local news is independent.

Headquartered in Vancouver Canada, we launched in May 2020 and now support publishers globally in English and Spanish.

Our mission is to defend independent journalism by reducing reliance on any single funder, revenue stream, audience platform or government, so local media can dictate their own future.

Our vision is a world where every community is served by a resilient, sovereign news outlet—transforming local civic information from a fragile endeavour to a thriving pillar of democracy.

• To help make sure your application doesn’t get lost, please apply through bambooHR rather than sending a separate email or LinkedIn message. The application involves submitting your resume and answering a few questions.
