About the Role:

Job Summary:

The Director of Product for Applied Research Intelligence (ARI) is a senior product leader who brings the voice of the corporate R&D customer into the heart of Wiley's newest growth business. ARI turns the world's trusted scientific literature and data into decision-grade intelligence for research and development teams in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, life-sciences, and materials sciences. This role owns Wiley's outward-facing product strategy for that market, reporting to the VP of Product, Applied Research Intelligence. The Director will lead partnerships and the integration ecosystem, shape how ARI is positioned and adopted, and translate deep, first-hand understanding of how R&D scientists work into product direction, customer wins, and partnership investments. It is a builder's role within an established global organization: high autonomy, high external visibility, and significant opportunity to grow into broader product leadership as the business scales.

Job Responsibilities:

Scope and Dimensions

• Operate as a senior product leader and a peer to commercial, partnership, and engineering leaders across ARI and the wider AI & Data Analytics organization, leading through influence across functions.

• Serve as a key external interface for the product with customers, design partners, and integration and technology partners, and represent ARI at industry and partner forums.

• Shape product direction, partnership strategy, and commercial positioning as ARI establishes and grows its presence in the market.

• Carry significant scope and autonomy, with the opportunity to build and lead an expanding product function as the business grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Own ARI's outward-facing product strategy and value proposition. Define a clear, differentiated market point of view for ARI across pharma, biotech, life-sciences, and material sciences R frame how Wiley's trusted content and intelligence are positioned to customers and partners; demonstrate value through real customer engagement. Result: ARI is recognized as a market-leading intelligence platform with a value proposition that is clear, differentiated, and proven with customers.

• Lead the partnership and integration ecosystem. Identify, evaluate, and prioritize integration and technology partners across the R&D tool ecosystem; shape build/buy/partner decisions and own the partnership and integration roadmap in close alignment with engineering, product, and partnerships teams and prospective and current partners. Result: a prioritized partnership and integration roadmap, with ARI embedded in the R&D ecosystem and its capabilities extended through the right partners.

• Drive early customer wins and adoption. Work hands-on with sales, services, and customers to secure early customers and pilots, and build a repeatable land-and-expand motion. Result: design-partner customers secured, with a repeatable, scalable commercial motion.

• Be the voice of the corporate R&D customer. Bring first-hand understanding of R&D scientists' workflows into the team; translate customer and market insight into product, enrichment, and roadmap priorities; feed competitive intelligence back to product, data science, and engineering. Result: roadmap and enrichment priorities grounded in real R&D workflows, with the team operating with sharp market and competitive awareness.

• Shape commercial pipeline through senior product influence. Provide expert product framing to high-value customer and partner conversations; move relationships from content licensing toward strategic intelligence partnership, and support premium positioning. Result: high-value opportunities won at strong economics, with conversations shifting from transactional licensing to strategic intelligence partnership.

• Represent ARI externally with authority. Be a credible, senior face for the product with customers, partners, and at industry conferences and events, operating effectively at C-suite and equivalent levels. Result: trusted senior relationships established, with ARI visibly and authoritatively represented in the market.

• Build and scale the product function. As the business grows, help build, shape, and lead an expanding product function, developing the team, ways of working, and product strategy. Result: a stronger, scalable product function and a durable product strategy that grows with the business.

Required Qualifications:

• First-hand experience working within corporate R&D in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life-sciences organizations, on or alongside research teams, working with scientific data and intelligence, combined with a demonstrated product mindset.

• A track record of generating insight and intelligence from scientific literature and data across the R&D value chain, for example early research, clinical development, real-world evidence, medical affairs, or scientific and competitive intelligence.

• 10+ years of progressive experience in senior product, data-science, or scientific-innovation leadership roles, including senior-level and zero-to-one/new-market work, taking products, tools, or decision systems from concept to launch as a hands-on builder and implementer, with direct, first-hand exposure to pharmaceutical or life-sciences R&D.

• Hands-on experience implementing GenAI and retrieval-based (RAG) solutions in a scientific or R&D context, as a proven implementer who has shipped production tools, with working familiarity across knowledge graphs, agentic AI, and APIs/integrations.

• Deep understanding of R&D scientists and their buyers, with the gravitas and credibility to hold authoritative conversations at senior and C-suite levels, internally and externally.

• A trusted advisor and cross-functional integrator who connects R&D, data/IT, and commercial functions so that innovation shows up in real workflows and decisions.

• Strong commercial instinct, with a track record of using product and market insight to shape deals, partnerships, and roadmap decisions.

• A proactive, go-getter operating style, highly comfortable with ambiguity and autonomy in a scale-up where the product and commercial motion is still being defined.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication, with the ability to translate across scientific, technical, commercial, and executive audiences.

• Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20%, primarily for customer and partner engagement, industry conferences, and team gatherings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in a life-sciences, neuroscience, or related scientific discipline, ideally paired with strong technical or computational fluency; equivalent experience will be considered.

• Depth in a therapeutic area where Wiley is strong, for example neuroscience and Alzheimer's, or oncology.

• Experience with scientific and competitive intelligence, IP/patent-landscape analysis, or FAIR data practices.

• Experience building, buying, or partnering to deliver scientific data or AI products; background in partnerships/business development, solutions, or technical pre-sales.

• An established network across pharma/biotech R&D and the life-sciences data ecosystem.

• Experience in a new business unit or scale-up where a product and commercial motion was established for the first time.
