Pipeline Engineer

About the role

Our Energy and Resources Division works with major exploration and distribution clients to deliver specialist mining, oil and gas projects across the country. These include process plant modifications, upstream flowlines, leases, network gathering and distribution systems, major gas transmission pipelines, oil and gas above ground processing facilities, as well as maintenance, integrity and construction related work programs.

We are recruiting for a Pipeline Engineer to be based in our Philippines team and work remotely to support our team and clients in Australia. The successful candidate will initially be hired by our partner agency in the Philippines as Fyfe builds our presence in the Philippines.

This role focuses on the design of buried polyethylene (HDPE / PE100) gas and water gathering networks for Australian coal seam gas and water infrastructure clients. These networks run for tens to hundreds of kilometres of buried pipe across farmland, carrying flammable gas or process water, and connecting wellsite's to processing facilities.

You will apply an established engineering design rule set to new network designs, direct our GIS and drafting team on routing, layout and attribution, and escalate the cases the rules do not cover to our Brisbane technical lead. You will not certify designs — that accountability sits with our Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ) in Australia.

Skills & experience

We are looking for a qualified engineer with 2 to 5 years' experience designing pipelines, piping or buried pressure networks. Onshore gas experience is ideal, but experience with buried water, LPG or process fluid networks is equally welcome.

This is a design role, not a piping stress analysis role. If your primary experience is Caesar II, AutoPIPE or piping stress and flexibility analysis, this position will not suit you, though we would be glad to consider you for other openings.

Requirements

• Tertiary qualifications in Pipeline, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical or Petroleum Engineering
• Registered Engineer with the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC)
• 2-5 years' experience designing pipelines, piping or buried pressure networks carrying a fluid
• Experience with either a flammable or hazardous fluid, or a buried pressure network of any fluid. One or the other is sufficient
• Familiar with GIS. You must be able to read and interrogate spatial data — attribute tables, domains, topology — but you do not need to build it
• Able to read a hydraulic model output and identify where it disagrees with the drafted alignment
• Comfortable working Australian core hours (approximately 6am to 3pm Manila time)
• Strong analytical and technical report writing skills
• Strong attention to detail
• High level communication, interpersonal and team management skills
• Advanced time management, planning and organisational skills
• Advanced initiative and ability to solve problems

• HDPE, PE100 or polyethylene pipe
• APGA Code of Practice for Upstream Polyethylene Gathering Networks
• Coal seam gas (CSG) or upstream gathering networks
• Australian Standards, including AS 2885 and AS/NZS 4130
• Previous exposure to Australian projects
• Hydraulic modelling software

A note on career direction

This position is deeply technical for at least the first two years. If your ambition over that period is to move into project management or engineering management, this role is unlikely to suit you. If it goes well, you would in time build and lead a small design team in the Philippines, while continuing to do technical work.
