About the Program

ValorMynd, a Valor Healthcare company, is partnering with Longwood University to expand access to timely, confidential mental health support for student-athletes.

The Longwood University Student-Athlete Behavioral Health Program complements existing university wellness and counseling services by providing student-athletes with a convenient, appointment-based option for short-term individual care. The program is designed to reduce barriers to accessing support while addressing the unique demands of balancing academics, athletics, relationships, performance, and personal well-being.

Position Summary

ValorMynd is seeking independently licensed Behavioral Health Clinicians (LCSW, LPC, LMHC, LMFT, or equivalent) to provide virtual individual mental health services to Longwood University student-athletes.

This is an opportunity to work with a unique and highly motivated population while helping student-athletes navigate mental health, performance, academic, and personal challenges that can accompany collegiate athletics.

The clinician will provide short-term, solution-focused therapy addressing common mental health and performance-related concerns. Responsibilities include clinical assessment, risk screening, evidence-based intervention, progress monitoring, and referral or care coordination when a student's needs extend beyond the scope of the program.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide confidential, individual behavioral health counseling through secure virtual video and/or telephone appointments.
• Deliver brief, goal-focused, solution-oriented therapy based on each student-athlete's clinical needs.
• Conduct initial clinical screenings, intake assessments, risk assessments, and establish individualized treatment goals.
• Utilize evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and, when clinically appropriate, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).
• Address common student-athlete concerns, including:
  • Performance anxiety
  • Academic and athletic stress
  • Anxiety and mild depressive symptoms
  • Adjustment and life transitions
  • Injury recovery and associated emotional challenges
  • Team and interpersonal conflict
  • Sleep concerns
  • Motivation
  • Stress management and coping skills
• Monitor clinical progress and utilize appropriate outcome/progress measures throughout treatment.
• Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation, with documentation completed within 24 hours of the encounter.
• Recognize situations that fall outside the scope of the program and initiate appropriate referrals for crisis services, higher levels of care, substance use concerns, eating disorder concerns, or other specialized behavioral health needs.
• Follow established university and program protocols related to safety concerns, mandated reporting, emergency situations, and referrals.
• Develop transition and discharge plans when treatment goals have been met or when continued care is indicated.
• Provide warm handoffs and referrals to Longwood Counseling Services, community providers, or other appropriate resources as clinically indicated.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy requirements, including HIPAA and FERPA-related requirements.
• Coordinate with designated university personnel only with appropriate consent and in accordance with applicable privacy standards.
• Develop familiarity with the culture, schedules, and unique stressors of the assigned athletic team(s).
• Participate in mental health education, seminars, workshops, or masterclasses for student-athletes and athletics personnel as requested.
• Support utilization tracking and provide information necessary for de-identified, aggregate program reporting.
• Participate in program evaluation and provide feedback regarding student-athlete needs, referral patterns, and opportunities for program improvement.

Clinical Approach

This position is part of a program intended to expand access to timely and confidential mental health support for student-athletes. The clinician will provide approximately 6–8 sessions per participating student-athlete, depending on the established program parameters and clinical need.

The program is designed for non-crisis behavioral health concerns. Student-athletes presenting with acute safety risks or requiring a higher level of care will be referred in accordance with established university crisis and emergency protocols.

Care Coordination

The Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician will follow an established care pathway that includes:

1. Referral or self-scheduling
2. Eligibility verification and consent
3. Intake, baseline measures, and risk screening
4. Individual virtual therapy
5. Progress monitoring and clinical documentation
6. Treatment completion and discharge planning
7. Referral or warm handoff to campus or community resources when appropriate

Student-athlete confidentiality will be maintained throughout the care process. University reporting will consist of de-identified, aggregate program information. Communication regarding an individual student-athlete will occur only when authorized by appropriate consent or otherwise permitted or required by applicable law and established safety protocols.

Required Qualifications

• Master's level Clinician: LCSW/LPC/LMHC/LMFTdegree or equivalent from an accredited program.
• Current, independent license: LCSW/LPC/LMHC/LMFT or equivalent in the state of Virgina.
• Minimum of two years conducting therapy sessions as a Licensed Behavioral Health Clinician
• Experience providing individual behavioral health therapy.
• Experience with evidence-based therapeutic interventions, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
• Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and care coordination skills.
• Ability to independently assess presenting concerns and determine when referral to a higher level of care is appropriate.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to provide compassionate, culturally responsive, and nonjudgmental care.
• Comfortably providing behavioral health services through a virtual platform.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect confidential health information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with college students, student-athletes, adolescents, or young adults.
• Experience addressing performance anxiety, sports psychology, athletic stress, injury recovery, or team dynamics.
• Training or experience in performance psychology.
• Experience working within a university, college athletics, sports medicine, or similar environment.
• Experience facilitating behavioral health education, workshops, or group presentations.
• Specialized training or credentials in sport/performance psychology is a plus:

• Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC)
• APA Sport Psychology Proficiency
