Copy Writer & Editor (Contractor)

Job Summary:

The copy writer and editor role is essential for supporting and elevating communications while enhancing the effectiveness of ASCP BOC operations and assuring positive outcomes for all constituents, both internal and external.

• Develops, supports, and elevates communications.
• Utilizes writing skills to develop, review, and maintain content for use on the ASCP BOC website, social media, email, newsletter, and other assets.
• Optimizes the use of communications copy by ASCP BOC team members, ensuring implementation of best practices.
• Upholds the high standards of editorial excellence for credentialing examinations.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Serve as the primary steward of written, visual, and multimedia communication standards across the ASCP BOC, ensuring consistency, accuracy, professionalism, and alignment with organizational goals.
• Act as the central authority for editorial review and content quality assurance for all internal and external communications produced by the ASCP BOC, including but not limited to:

• Broadcast emails
• Partner communications
• Volunteer communications
• Executive communications
• Internal staff communications
• High-priority or escalated constituent communications
• Social media content
• Website content
• Presentations and PowerPoint slide decks
• Marketing and promotional materials
• Flyers, brochures, and advertisements
• Newsletters
• Reports and publications
• Video scripts, captions, and multimedia content

• Ensure all communications adhere to ASCP BOC Communications Best Practices, organizational branding guidelines, approved controlled documents, website standards, and established communication protocols.
• Conduct editorial review of credentialing examination questions for accurate grammar, punctation, spelling, consistency, and formatting prior to publication.
• Apply and enforce editorial standards utilizing:

• ASCP BOC Communications Best Practices as the primary organizational style authority
• Associated Press (AP) Style guidelines
• American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style guidelines
• ASCP BOC branding and visual identity standards
• Approved organizational terminology, nomenclature, and messaging frameworks
• ASCP BOC logousebest practices

• Partner closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to maintain a unified organizational voice across all stakeholder-facing communications.

• Collaborate with the Credentialing Services, Examination Excellence, and Operations teams to review, edit, and enhance communication materials before publication or distribution.
• Establish and maintain editorial workflows, review processes, and quality control procedures that support consistency across all ASCP BOC communication channels and portfolios.
• Review and edit communications for grammar, punctuation, spelling, readability, tone, style, accessibility, inclusivity, brand alignment, and audience appropriateness.
• Ensure the proper use of organizational terminology, credential nomenclature, examination language, credentialing references, and regulatory or accreditation-related terminology across all communication platforms.
• Maintain and continuously improve the organization's communications standards, style guides, templates, editorial resources, and content governance documentation.
• Serve as a strategic advisor to the ASCP BOC team regarding effective communication practices, audience engagement, message framing, and content development.
• Support the development, review, and maintenance of organizational messaging frameworks for stakeholders, credential holders, volunteers, program leaders, educators, healthcare organizations, regulatory agencies, and partner organizations.
• Review and provide editorial guidance for visual communication assets, ensuring consistency between written content and graphical presentation across presentations, infographics, promotional materials, and digital assets.
• Partner with staff responsible for video production and multimedia content to ensure scripts, captions, voiceover content, visual storytelling, and video library assets align with established communication and branding standards.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of organizational asset libraries, communication templates, presentation repositories, and content management resources to promote consistency and efficiency across teams.
• Conduct periodic audits of organizational communications, digital platforms, shared resources, and stakeholder-facing materials to identify opportunities for standardization, improvement, and alignment with current communication guidelines.
• Provide training, coaching, and consultation to the ASCP BOC team and volunteers on editorial standards, branding requirements, communication best practices, AP Style, AMA Style, and approved ASCP BOC messaging.
• Support continuous quality improvement by recommending enhancements to communication processes, standards, templates, and governance practices that strengthen the quality and consistency of ASCP BOC communications.
• Ensure that all communication activities reflect the ASCP BOC's commitment to professionalism, credentialing excellence, stakeholder engagement, and patient-centered laboratory medicine.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

• Demonstrated proficiency in reviewing and editing examination questions in laboratory medicine, pathology, or other related domains, with excellent proofreading skills and high attention to detail.
• Experience applying effective communication and de-escalation strategies to address constituent inquiries and concerns across multiple channels, including direct correspondence and social media.

Education and Experience:

• Associate’s or bachelor'sdegreerequired; experience or educational background in medical laboratory science, pathology, laboratory medicine, healthcare, or a related field preferred. ASCP BOC credential holders are strongly encouraged to apply.
