Admissions Writing Coach / Essay Editor

About Jack Westin

Jack Westin is a leading Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) preparation company which is known for crafting high quality, but free, practice materials. The MCAT tests students on the scientific reasoning skills and scientific knowledge which can be learned during typical undergraduate coursework.

Our Three Principles

As we continue to grow and help students, we are guided by three major principles that we believe are vital to our community.

Attention to quality

We only create courses and practice questions that we would use. That means having the best, first-class teaching content that can possibly exist. We're not satisfied with mediocrity. We don't care about the amount of time or money it takes to get something done right. If it's not perfect, we won't stop until we believe it is. This ethos runs deep within our company.

Excellence in support

We're obsessed with our students. Their well-being and success drives us each day. Great customer service is not an afterthought. It is the most important service we can offer. We understand that our students come from different learning backgrounds. It's our mission to ensure that each one has an amazing experience.

Learn from anywhere at anytime

We are committed to building the future of education on the internet so that it is easily accessible to all students from around the world. Our dedication is to all students who want to learn, regardless of their pace, and no matter what time of the day it is.

Admissions Writing Coach / Essay Editor(Remote, Part-Time)

The Admissions Writing Coach is the first expert to work with each student's application materials, helping them turn ordinary drafts into compelling, admissions-committee-ready essays. This role goes well beyond proofreading: coaches strengthen prompt alignment, content, structure, and language while keeping every essay unmistakably the student's own. Coaches work closely with Jack Westin's admissions experts, who hold final say and conduct the last round of review before each submission returns to the student.

Responsibilities

• Coach students through personal statements, AMCAS/AACOMAS/TMDSAS activities, most meaningful experiences, secondary essays, MD/PhD essays, letters of intent, and other admissions materials
• Provide detailed, substantive feedback on prompt alignment, content, structure, and language, the way a thoughtful admissions committee member would
• Model strong writing without writing for the student: draft illustrative examples tailored to the student's real background, then guide them to rewrite in their own words
• Research relevant details (programs, diagnoses, clinical settings) so guidance and examples are specific and grounded
• Leave a small number of focused margin notes that explain your reasoning and point the student toward their next step
• Protect the student's authentic voice at every stage of the process
• Lead brainstorming and strategy sessions with students, while the assigned admissions expert remains their primary point of contact
• Flag anything needing expert judgment with clear, actionable notes, and document your reasoning so guidance stays consistent across the team
• Contribute to educational resources, training materials, and admissions content, and participate in coach training and quality reviews
• Meet established turnaround times and quality benchmarks

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing, English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field (Premium Admissions Level)
• At least 5 years of professional editing, writing, teaching, publishing, or journalism experience and/or a creative writing certification (Signature Admissions Level)
• Exceptional writing, developmental feedback, and coaching skills, with strong command of grammar, style, and mechanics
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
• Experience coaching or editing medical school admissions materials preferred
• Familiarity with AMCAS, AACOMAS, TMDSAS, and common secondary essay prompt types preferred
• Working knowledge of a house style guide and consistency standards preferred

What We Offer

• $40–$50/hour
• Part-time contractor role, approximately 15–25 hours per week
• Fully remote with a flexible schedule
• Consistent, year-round work tied to the application cycle
• Professional development opportunities
• Be part of a mission-driven team helping future healthcare professionals reach medical school
