Our mission is simple: get more teachers teaching. Since 2010, we’ve helped aspiring and current teachers pass their certification exams and complete certification programs through 240 Tutoring and 240 Certification.

We’re a remote-first, profitable company approaching $25M in annual revenue. About the Role

This role owns the accounting function end-to-end, from the close and the ledger to controls, payroll, order-to-cash, tax and compliance, for a profitable company with two business lines, partner and district billing, deferred program revenue, and employees in approximately fifteen states.

The CFO owns forecasting, capital allocation, and the board relationship. You own the fact that the numbers are right, on time, explainable, and audit-ready. This is a hands-on seat. You will close the books yourself as often as you review someone else's work, and you will be the person who turns manual, spreadsheet-dependent processes into systems that hold up at twice our current size.

What You’ll Own

Monthly close and financial reporting

• Own the close calendar and the documented close checklist
• Produce consolidated financials plus segment P&Ls for both product lines
• Full balance sheet reconciliations, flux analysis, and budget-vs-actual commentary that explains why, not just what
• Provide the CFO with the clean, reconciled numbers and schedules behind the monthly board update

Revenue accounting

• ASC 606 across a monthly DTC subscription base and two partner-funded models: partner-purchased subscriptions at a deep discount, and student self-purchase with discount codes
• Deferred revenue schedules for certification program tuition, including refunds, withdrawals, and program-completion timing
• Reconcile billing and payment processors to the general ledger every month: proration, failed payments, chargebacks, refunds, discount-code leakage

Order-to-cash with partners and districts

• Invoicing for Educator Preparation Programs and school districts: purchase orders, W-9s, vendor portals, net terms, exemption certificates
• AR aging, collections cadence, bad-debt reserve, and making sure what's in the contract is what gets invoiced, alongside the Partnerships team

Procure-to-pay, payroll, and cash

• Accounts payable, vendor onboarding, corporate card and expense policy, and visibility into software spend
• Multi-state payroll in partnership with HR: state registrations, unemployment insurance accounts, W-2 and 1099 processing, and staying current as remote headcount moves across state lines
• Weekly cash position, cash reserves and working capital, banking and merchant-processor relationships, free cash flow reporting

Tax and regulatory compliance

• Federal and state income and franchise filings with our outside CPA firm
• Sales and use tax on digital subscriptions, including the registrations, back-filing, and go-forward decisions from the multi-state nexus review already in progress
• Sales and payroll tax nexus as the remote footprint expands
• Support state-level financial reporting required by the certification program
• Business licenses, annual reports, insurance renewals, 1099 and W-9 compliance

Controls, audit, and SOC 2

• Design and document internal controls that work with genuine segregation-of-duties constraints on a small team
• Own the finance-relevant SOC 2 controls and compliance evidence alongside the CFO: control self-assessments, third-party agreements, insurance maintenance
• Manage external CPA, tax, and audit relationships, and be ready to run a first financial statement audit or review if we choose to have one
• Maintain written policies: revenue recognition, expense and approval matrix, capitalization, month-end checklist

Systems and processes

• Own the finance stack (QuickBooks, BambooHR for payroll) and reduce the manual reconciliation load every quarter
• Automate aggressively. We have a strong internal AI-tooling culture and finance should be a beneficiary, not a holdout

Team and business partnership

• Manage and develop the Senior Accountant, and shape what the function looks like at twice the revenue
• Support unit-economics work: customer acquisition cost, contribution margin by revenue stream, growth-plus-profitability targets, and discount and pricing analysis with Partnerships and Product
• Be a close partner to the CFO on board and diligence prep

What We’re Looking For

Required

• 6+ years in accounting with increasing scope, including 2+ years owning a monthly close start to finish
• Hands-on ASC 606 experience in a subscription or deferred-revenue business
• Multi-state payroll and multi-state sales/use tax experience
• Experience building close processes, checklists, and controls from the ground up

Preferred

• CPA (active or lapsed), or CMA
• Public accounting background, especially audit
• SaaS, subscription, or education technology experience
• Business-to-government, district, or higher-education billing experience
• SOC 2 or another controls-attestation environment
• Experience at a bootstrapped, profitable company. Cash discipline is a different instinct than managing burn
