AI Governance Director

Overview

The Artificial Intelligence Governance, Director provides enterprise-wide oversight, coordination, and visibility for Cotiviti’s AI governance framework, ensuring consistent documentation, responsible AI use, regulatory readiness, and ongoing post deployment compliance monitoring across all business units.

The position operates with significant autonomy at the Enterprise level to develop and oversee enterprise AI governance standards, compliance reporting mechanisms, and evidence collection processes, while ensuring business units retain ownership, accountability, and responsibility for implementation and operation of their AI initiatives. It exercises independent judgment to drive cross business unit alignment, proactive risk management, and leadership level visibility into AI use, compliance posture, AI risk tolerance, and governance maturity across the enterprise.

The AIG serves as the steward of the enterprise AI governance program but does not assume ownership of business-unit AI initiatives, operational decisions, or technology implementation responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide enterprise‑wide oversight of AI governance by developing and recommending AI governance standards, reporting expectations, and evidence‑collection processes to ensure responsible use, regulatory readiness, and ongoing compliance monitoring across business units.
• Maintain and periodically update AI governance policies, standards, procedures, and supporting documentation to address evolving technologies, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and business needs.
• Serve as the enterprise coordinator and governance lead for AI‑related client, regulatory, and third‑party inquiries by managing intake, triage, response coordination, and delivery of accurate and reporting across business units and corporate functions.
• Coordinate and support executive and Board-level reporting regarding AI governance, risk management, regulatory developments, and program maturity.
• Chair or co‑chair the AI governance committee and oversee AI intake and risk‑tier review processes to ensure consistent governance decisions and visibility across the organization.
• Maintain a centralized, audit‑ready inventory of AI use cases, including risk assessments, approvals, testing artifacts, limitations, and records retention.
• Provide oversight of post‑deployment monitoring by tracking required attestations, mitigation actions, and compliance status while business units remain responsible for execution.
• Provide governance guidance on external demonstrations or disclosures of AI capabilities to protect intellectual property, security posture, and contractual commitments.
• Deliver regular leadership reporting on AI governance health, including inquiry trends, compliance gaps, risk outcomes, and governance maturity indicators.
• Coordinate enterprise AI governance training, awareness, and communications programs to support compliance with AI-related policies, standards, and governance requirements.
• Monitor emerging AI laws, regulations, enforcement actions, industry standards, and client expectations and assess implications for Cotiviti's governance framework and operations.
• Coordinate preparation for internal audits and external examinations related to AI by organizing evidence, managing governance repositories, and tracking findings to closure.
• Partner with engineering and platform teams to embed governance requirements into development workflows and enable automation of evidence capture and controls.
• Publish governance templates, standards updates, and exemplars to support adoption, consistency, and change management.
• Work closely with legal, compliance, privacy, information security, information governance, and business leaders to align AI governance requirements and maintain traceability.
• Review external AI governance frameworks and standards and recommend practical alignment steps to strengthen governance maturity and client trust.
• Support improved AI delivery efficiency by helping streamline governance workflows and reduce intake‑to‑decision timelines.
• Complete all responsibilities as outlined in the annual performance review and/or goal setting.
• Complete all special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher required in one of the following fields: Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Data Science, Law, Public Policy, Risk Management, or a related discipline.
• Advanced degree strongly preferred, such as a Juris Doctor (JD), Master’s degree, or equivalent graduate education, particularly in law, technology, data, policy, or risk‑related fields.
• 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in technology governance, risk management, compliance, legal, product oversight, or a related field within a complex, regulated environment.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: AI, data, or technology governance: regulatory compliance, risk management, or audit readiness; oversight of complex, cross‑functional technology or product programs; or responding to external inquiries such as client audits, RFPs, regulatory requests, or attestations.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating across business, legal, compliance, and technical teams to establish standards, manage risk, and support enterprise decision‑making.
• Experience working in regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, financial services, government contracting, or technology‑enabled services).
• Deep and proven experience with AI governance concepts, risk‑tiering models, post‑deployment monitoring, and audit‑ready documentation.
• Experience engaging with external stakeholders, including clients, regulators, or auditors.
• Preferred Certifications: IAPP Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP), IAPP privacy certifications (e.g., CIPP and/or CIPM), ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor (AI Management Systems), ISACA certifications (e.g., CISA and/or CRISC), or another risk, audit, or compliance certifications relevant to technology governance.

• Systems Thinking: Understands the interconnected relationships between AI technologies, data governance, cybersecurity, privacy, legal requirements, and business operations to make informed decisions.
• Learning Agility: Rapidly acquires and applies knowledge of evolving AI technologies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements to continuously enhance governance practices.
• Communication and Conceptual Reasoning: Synthesizes complex technical and regulatory information into clear, actionable guidance for executives, technical teams, and business stakeholders.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Travel as assigned by leadership (5%)
• Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
• Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
• No adverse environmental conditions expected.
• Must be able to provide a dedicated, secure work area.
• Must be able to provide high-speed internet access / connectivity and office setup and maintenance.

Base compensation ranges from $130,000 to $180,000 per year. Specific offers are determined by various factors, such as experience, education, skills, certifications, and other business needs. This role is eligible for discretionary bonus consideration.
